One of the most important things you can gain from work experience is working out exactly what you do – or don’t – want to do with your life.
Emmanuel College Year 10 student Emerson Rivett had exactly that experience when she recently worked at o2 Media for a week. Read her reflections to find out more …
As a year ten student doing work experience, working at o2 Media doing journalism has been an absolute blast!
I have had such a tremendous time working with the team and I have learned so much, especially about living in the life of a journalist. By putting me straight to work writing articles, o2 has taught me more than I ever would have expected and it has definitely been worthwhile.
No doubt I have had a fantastic week but I think the most valuable lesson I have learned is that maybe journalism isn’t as perfect for me, as I have previously thought. I love writing but I think the structured and factual manner of writing for a magazine is just too restricting for my crazy imagination! I have realised, that if I were to become a journalist in the future I wouldn’t be able to express my style the way I’d like to.
I look upon my recent realisations in a positive way, even though it means my once clear career pathway has blurred inevitably, I can now tackle that speed-bump confidently instead of heading in a direction not right for me. Work experience couldn’t have come at a better time for me because heading into year eleven is a huge step in terms of careers and I now know that I shouldn’t glue myself to the idea of becoming a journalist.
The team has been so patient and inclusive with me and I couldn’t be more grateful for what they have taught me.
